St. Giles Cathedral, also known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, was rebuilt after a fire in 1385, but there are remaining portions that date all the way back to 1120. It is Presbyterianism's Mother Church, and is named after St. Giles, a 7th century hermit who inspired the building of safehouses and hospitals after his own accidental death. It has an active congregation, and sees a quarter million visitors each year. Address: Royal Mile Edinburgh EDH Scotland EH1 1RE
