Holyrood Abbey Church of Scotland Holyrood Abbey is literally a shell of its former self, but it is still the site where many of Scotland's most important events, including the two marriages of Mary, Queen of Scots, were held. After several restorations, the roof finally collapsed in 1768, and was never repaired. The Augustinian Abbey was originally built in 1128, founded by King David I as thanks for being saved from the deadly horns of a hart while hunting.
